She'd been visiting the playground alone for the past week. It was quiet at night, which allowed her the space to think. When she first noticed the swing next to her move on its own, it intrigued, rather than frightened her. She watched it creak back and forth, and then slow when she'd reach out to make a connection. Try as she might, her fingers would always grasp at nothing.

Within eyesight of the playground was a cemetery. It was her belief that the person using the swing must be a benevolent spirit from that place. Someone inclined to linger in a playground after their death. Someone who now offered comfort in her loneliness. Maybe a child, or someone like her. Someone who wished things were simple and kind. It was her belief that the spirit who joined her each evening, thought swings were more fun than headstones or mausoleums. She was unsure.

It had been a morning where she wondered if the cemetery wasn't the better place. The troublesome thought lingered all day. When night fell, she hurried to the playground, hoping the spirit would be there. It was, and they swung in tandem. What had been a fast-dying ember of happiness, grew within her being, and caught like a flame. The graveyard disappeared from her vision below, replaced by the stars above. Higher and higher she swung, until her feet almost touched the sky. Her thoughts were pulled, one by one, until nothing but elation remained. When she finally realized what had happened, she slowed until the creaking from the swing stopped completely.

Silence settled in the playground in the wake of her departure. The hulking and misshapen entity who had occupied the swing, peeled itself from it and followed her into the graveyard.

BETWEEN Excerpt:

Cronan stood on the porch. Swathed in a black overcoat this time, his hands were behind his back. Icy, gray eyes reflected the light from within. “Did I surprise you?”
“Um, I was expecting somebody else,” she responded without thinking. Her eyes flickered past him into the darkness.
“I never had the chance to thank you for your hospitality the other night.”
“That’s quite all right Mr. Cronan. Were you able to find a place to stay?” Her heart pounded in her chest.
“I am still working on it. And please, just Cronan. No Mister.”
There was an expectant pause before he continued. “I brought you something.” He pulled a wine bottle out from behind his back. “A small token of my appreciation.”
Lucinda felt her cheeks warm. “How nice of you. I don’t really drink.”
“Ever?” He ran his hand along the door frame, keeping his eyes upon her.
“Well, um, sometimes.” Her gaze followed his hand. “You really didn’t need to do that. But thank you.”
“And you,” he continued, “did not need to offer to let me sleep here the other night.” Cronan took a slight step forward. “But you did.”
Lucinda nervously took the bottle from him. She read the label. “Nineteen thirty-seven? Wow, that’s old.”
“Not so old.”
“Huh. Um, I really need to turn in for the night.” She heard Darwin’s insistent barking from the backyard and turned at the sound. When she turned back, she jumped. Cronan stood over her. Her breath quickened. “Good luck finding a place.”
“Yes.” He looked down at her, appraising her with an icy stare. “Could you recommend a dwelling around here?”
“I’m sure there are plenty of ‘dwellings’ around here. Or the next town over if the beach rentals are full. Maybe you should talk to a real estate agent?”
Disappointment crossed his features. Cronan made no move to leave but continued to stand over her, eyes locked with hers.
Lucinda found herself studying his face without thinking. His light skin was unmarred, broken only by the faint, dark shadow of stubble along his jaw line. His lips quirked upward, slightly mocking. She felt his cool breath brush her cheek, and her thoughts tumbled over themselves. The scent of summer rain hitting stones seemed to emanate from his skin. “I need to go.”
“Yes, you do.” Cronan paused. He bowed his head and took a step back from the threshold.
Lucinda fumbled with the door. “Thank you, again, for the wine. Really.”
Tautness settled across his lips.
She closed the door and locked the sticky deadbolt with some difficulty. Rushing to the back, she let Darwin in. He frantically sniffed around her feet and ran to the front door, growling.
“Okay, Darwin. Everything’s fine. Calm down.” She set the bottle on the counter and stared at it like it was a venomous snake.
Okay, Lucinda, get a grip, she told herself. Nothing happened. He gave you a bottle of wine, for heaven’s sake.
She gazed at the bottle on her counter. “It must have cost a fortune, though.” She picked it up again. “Nineteen thirty-seven Château Gilette Crème de Tête.” She ran the tips of her fingers across the smooth unmarred label, lingering at the edges. Setting the bottle back on the counter, she headed to bed.
The wind picked up outside. A presence slipped through the house and around the corners before it finally settled beside Lucinda’s sleeping form with a restless exhale.

Harvest by Clarissa Johal

The stranger had been following her for a while. She'd managed to dodge him, taking several wrong turns, and feeling like she had the upper hand. There had been a few instances where he'd almost caught up with her, but luck was on her side.

Not today, she thought. Not now. Stealing across the cemetery, she felt it was the last place he'd expect her to go. The cemetery was dark and secreted by trees. Moonlight trickled through their naked branches, casting finger-like shadows across the headstones. A chilly breeze blew through the area.

She slipped behind one of the larger headstones and hunkered down. Straining to hear the slightest movement, nothing but silence filled the air. Too much silence, she thought. Usually, there was the sound of crickets or frogs, but to hear nothing, caused a stab of panic. She started to make yet another escape, when a small sound alerted her that she wasn't alone. A chill descended upon her, and she felt her muscles tense.  The stranger had followed her into the cemetery, after all.

She pressed her back against the cold granite, and tried to catch her breath. If she peeked from the headstone, the stranger may see her. But if she didn't, she'd never know which direction to run. Gathering her courage, she looked. The cemetery was devoid of life. Grave markers pointed accusingly at the night sky. She warily stepped from the safety of her hiding place. Traces of moonlight hit her skin and streamed past. Poised at a breath of relief, there was a sudden sharp tap on her shoulder. She turned with a cry.

The shadow of the stranger was frightening, as she'd expected. However, a curious sense of relief washed over her. At least now, she knew what she was dealing with. "Not today," she said, backing away. "Not now."

His reply stopped time.

#Paranormal Wednesday - Strays from the Spirit World

I’ve always been a half-way house for every stray animal that roams the neighborhood. There was a time, before kids and my husband, that I housed no less than twenty cats. Sad, but true. The downtown area I lived had a huge stray problem and for some reason, they always ended up on my back porch. I worked hard to assure they had proper veterinary care, and yes, it helped that I was in the veterinary field.

Nowadays, with my kiddos and husband, I seem to get less strays coming my way. Different neighborhood, I suppose, but we do get them. There’s the four pound cat that followed my husband to his car after work, a goldfish with a defective swim-bladder that needed to be hand fed, freshwater crabs that came to us as ex-classroom pets, a dog that had been chained in someone’s back yard for years and hadn't the slightest idea of what “inside” meant, an iguana that had broken every bone in her body because she was fed iceberg lettuce for years, the list goes on.

But what about attracting strays when it comes to writing? Is that possible? I've talked before how my paranormal novel BETWEEN came to me. I was working on my fantasy series when I was hit by two characters that didn't belong. Though I kept setting them aside, they wouldn't leave me alone and seemed determined that I write their story. Which I did. In retrospect, the novel came “out of the blue.”

This gives me pause for thought. Can writers attract “strays” when it comes to the spirit world? Is that possible? We’re open to ideas and thoughts and commit them on paper. Given that there are probably many people in history with stories to tell, would it not make sense that the spirit world would take advantage of that? I guess we’ll never know but it’s certainly up for debate.

BETWEEN and STRUCK New Cover Reveals!

Musa Publishing closed its doors as of February 28th. It's been a joy to work and grow with them. I'm sad to see this happen but publishing is a very competitive business. The good news is that both BETWEEN and STRUCK have been re-released and are available on Amazon as ebooks and in print.

My Amazon reviews should transferred soon to the re-releases but you can read reviews for both titles HERE.

Stay tuned for availability on Barnes and Noble.

Musa Publishing Closes it's Doors...

I'm sad to report that my publisher Musa Publishing will be closing it's doors on February 28, 2015. Musa was my first publisher and a place where I learned a lot. The closing left a lot of authors sad/angry/lost/many things but I have to say, in spite of much stress, Musa has handled author concerns with respect and fairness. Rights reversion letters were available immediately and any communication has been quick and helpful. While it's easy to point fingers and lay blame, publishing is a very competitive business and they tried their best.

So, what does that mean for BETWEEN and STRUCK, the two books I have with Musa Publishing? Much like Dobby in Harry Potter, they've been given The Sock. After much consideration and contract offers from other publishers, I've decided to go indie with both of them. I redesigned new covers and kept the interior of the books as they were. Both STRUCK and BETWEEN have gotten awesome reviews and I saw no need to re-edit.

Stay-tuned for "official" cover reveals tomorrow and new buy links as I get them.
They will be available in ebook and in print paperback.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How did you come up with the idea for BETWEEN?

Three years ago, I was working on a sequel to a fantasy novel when I had this weird “calling.” Two characters came to me in a rush; Lucas and Cronan from BETWEEN. They weren’t fantasy characters nor they didn’t fit into what I was writing but they wouldn’t go away. I kept setting them aside but they’d come back, stronger than ever. I put the fantasy sequel on hold, wrote non-stop for a month, and finished the first draft. That never happens! It usually takes me months to finish a first draft. A year later, my edits were finished, and two months later, BETWEEN was picked up by Musa Publishing. I’ve got my feet firmly planted in the Otherworld now, the ideas come faster than I can write them down.

What first inspired you to become a writer? And what compels you to continue your career as an author?

I wrote my first short story in grade six. I was asked by the teacher to read it aloud to the class, which terrified me. After I was finished, I realized that I actually had everyone’s attention! I was shy and we moved every year, so I was always the new kid. When you’re in that situation, it’s kind of like being invisible. Finding my voice through story-telling made me realize how powerful writing could be. As far as continuing—truthfully? I think I’d go nuts if I didn’t write.

What made you choose the genre of paranormal gothic horror?

I started out writing fantasy fiction. I was working on the second installment to my PRADEE series when there were two characters that kept showing up on the page, over and over. They didn’t belong in fantasy novel, nor did they belong in my story! But their backstory came to me so vividly, that I set aside my series and wrote my first paranormal novel, BETWEEN. I’ve been pulled into the Otherworld permanently now. The ideas come faster than I can write them down.

How far would you go to redeem yourself?

As a young girl, Lucinda was able to see spirits, a gift that didn't come without its problems. Now, a dedicated young veterinarian, she is committed to the idea that every life can be saved.

After a devastating accident, Lucinda tries to escape her past by moving to a small town. There, she meets a newcomer and feels an immediate connection with him. But there is another mysterious stranger to the small town, one that stirs within her a mixture of unease and desire.

As Lucinda is drawn into a bitter tug-a-war from the forces around her, she is likewise pulled into a dangerous twist of past and present events. Forced to make difficult choices, she finds that the two men are locked in not only a battle for her life...but a battle for their salvation.

STRUCK by Clarissa Johal

The shadows hadn't been waiting.
The shadows had been invited.

After a painful breakup, Gwynneth Reese moves in with her best friend and takes a job at a retirement home. She grows especially close to one resident, who dies alone the night of a terrific storm. On the way home from paying her last respects, Gwynneth is caught in another storm and is struck by lightning. She wakes in the hospital with a vague memory of being rescued by a mysterious stranger. Following her release from the hospital, the stranger visits her at will and offers Gwynneth a gift--one that will stay the hands of death. Gwynneth is uncertain whether Julian is a savior or something more sinister... for as he shares more and more of this gift, his price becomes more and more deadly.
