Wendigo by Clarissa Johal

It feasted on the flesh of the hunter and sat back, satiated. The snow-covered forest lay silent and still. A snap of ice filled the air with an urgency that bespoke of a long, unforgiving winter. Power coursed through its being, as its presence increased. It would only be a short while before the hunger would begin to gnaw again. Licking its boney fingers clean, it settled in a snow-drift to await its prey. If the creature would have been made of flesh and blood, it would have felt the sting of ice. But it wasn't.

The second hunter crept along, his bow drawn, attention focused on the trees. By the time he realized his mistake, it was too late. Bright crimson blood splashed across the snow. The creature dove into the warmth of the body, ripping it to shreds. After the initial excitement had waned, it sat back on its haunches and surveyed the remnants of its prize. It would be a long time before it found another tribe. The robust vigor from the blood of the hunter flooded it's being like a drug. It could stop at feeding on these two humans, but it knew there were more. The creature cocked its head, pale eyes on the tree line. The others were coming. Their footsteps crunched in the snow like a dinner bell. It formulated a plan, one that it found an amusing challenge. It would inhabit the body of one and then finish the tribe off.

Camouflaging itself in the snow, it settled to wait.

The hunter crept warily through the snow-covered trees. He thought he'd heard a cry, but the forest was blanketed with an unnatural silence. As he entered the small clearing, the scene unfolded. The remains of his fellow kinsmen were strewn across the snow. Bright red contrasted with blinding whiteness. He quickly scanned the clearing and saw no movement which would suggest the animal was still in the area. Lowering his bow, he approached the bodies. His gaze fastened on the drops of blood splashed across the snow like confetti. Repulsion hit before it was overcome by curiosity. He traced his fingers through the blood of his fellow tribesman.

The moment the blood touched his lips, a change came over him. The gnawing hunger which made his bellyache through the past icy winter months was gone. In its place, he felt a surge of power and heat. A small sound from behind caused his attention to shift. He quickly wiped the blood from his lips and stood to face his fellow tribesmen. Their looks of alarm caused a bubble of shame to rise from within his being, but the excitement quickly stifled it. Four. There were four hunters. And they would be his, along with their families.

The humans quickly assessed the scene of slaughter and then decided to return to the village.

The creature trailed after them, wearing the guise of their tribesman. Hunger gnawed at him, quickly dispelling the warmth that had been there moments ago.

The Equal Rights Blog Hop-July 4th-11th

This blog hop is over and the winner of my contest has been notified by email (congrats Shirley!) Thank you so much for participating!

Hosted by Queer Town Abbey an online magazine and a social networking website, tailored specifically for the LGBTQ community and anyone who supports the rights of its members.

The theme of this blog hop is “Your first experience in the LGBTQ community”

I actually don't remember my first experience. I never had the challenge of coming out as LGBTQ to my family or my community. I'm not gay but was always involved in theatre and went to a high school of performing arts. The culture was there and I never thought anything of it. It wasn't until I hit my 20's that I started to realize being gay was an issue for some. I knew on some level that my gay friends struggled within the community but embarrassingly, I didn't realize how much. One incident brought that "knew on some level" to a more personal one. My friend Gabriel and I had gone out for a night of dancing and fun. At one particular club, a group of guys decided to beat Gabriel up for no reason other than he was gay. I'm not a fist fight kind of girl but I do stick up for my friends. And it got bad. I think that's when it truly hit home (in more ways than one) the struggle he faced as a gay man in a straight community. Not because of the physical fight but because of the emotional pain it caused him afterwards. Emotional pain he didn't deserve.

I always try and think of the good that comes from a bad situation. What good came from this? (Other than my Doc Martins+Ballet background=Good kicks in a fight) Well, it made me more sensitive and less naïve. Just because I grew up accepting of people's sexuality didn't mean everyone felt the same way. I was unprepared for how violent people could be. I was unprepared for the aftermath. I was unprepared for how much rage I felt at how blatantly unfair the situation was. It's why I'm so vocal about LGBTQ rights today. It's why I'm raising kids who are aware of the struggles and how important it is for people to have equal rights.

I do hope you have a wonderful July 4th and beyond. July the 4th marks the celebration of Independence Day in the United States. Queer Town Abbey invites you to follow the blog hop and celebrate the LBGTQ march toward independence. Onto the blog hop and prizes...

My prize is an ecopy of my latest paranormal gothic horror:

The Story of Red
by Clarissa Johal

Halloween. It's the time when spirits come out to play. A time when the veil becomes thin and spirits can cross over at will.
Do you believe is ghosts? I'm going to tell you a ghost story, because it's what I do.

It was October of 2002 and I was pregnant with my second child. In my last trimester, I was carrying an extra 25 extra pounds, had morning sickness 24/7, and was almost ready to give up on my 2-year-old's social life. That's when I met Angie. Fun and free-spirited, Angie was also pregnant, and had a 2-year-old with boundless energy. We hit it off immediately. She and her husband had just moved into the area, and bought a beautiful old house from the 1920s. The house had been for sale as a fixer-upper for months. I'd driven by it several times, and when she invited me over, I was excited to finally see the inside.

The moment I stepped through the front door, I saw an old man standing by the window. I knew technically he wasn't there, because what I was seeing...was a ghost.

Let me explain how seeing a ghost goes--at least for me. You don't see with your eyes, but rather with a corner of your brain which slams an image into your thoughts. And there it stays, unlike any other. Does that sound weird? C'est la vie. It is what it is.

So, back to my story. The ghost stood facing the window, his head bowed. Light passed through him and washed out all color. He wore solid pants with a thin belt, a checkered, button-up shirt, and dress shoes. The sorrow and sadness radiating from him was overwhelming. Every time I visited Angie, he'd be there. Same position, same clothes, and seemingly stuck in a world of his own.
And essentially, I guess he was.

I pondered on whether or not to bring the subject of him up. Our friendship was new, and I realize that some people got weirded-out discussing these things. But as time passed, I was distracted by the old man's presence. It felt rude not to acknowledge him. Kind of like I was ignoring another person in the room.

Finally, I decided to broach the subject. The conversation went like this:

"Angie, do you ever see an old man in your house?"
"No, I haven't."
"Do you believe in ghosts? Because I kind of feel like you have one."
"There was an old man who died in this house before we bought it," she said. "How weird! Describe him to me."
And I did.
"Do you get a name?" she asked.
Up until that point, I hadn't. But as soon as she asked, the name "Red" slammed into my thoughts pretty hard. "Red?" I repeated, unsure.
Angie's eyes widened. She jumped up and began to rummage through a drawer in her kitchen. "His name is in here," she said. "Oh, my God, I have to show you." After several minutes, she pulled out some papers.
To my surprise, Red was the nickname of the man who died in the house. He was a WWII war veteran, and never quite recovered from his experience. He lived with his daughter until the day he died, apparently not speaking a word after returning from Germany.
I was kind of overwhelmed. Aside from that, I felt helpless. It made me sad that he was stuck in Angie's house--trapped by his past, and unable to move on after his death.

That experience will always stick with me. Up until then, I hadn't trusted myself when it came to supernatural happenings. The things I saw and experienced while growing up, had been categorized as "weird stuff" that could logically be explained away.

So, do you believe in ghosts now? Does this count as evidence of the existence of ghosts? No, because you don't know me, and I may be making it all up.
Except that I'm not.

Speaking of supernatural happenings, take a look at...
